This complaint is actually relating to the charge account that my mother HAD with Kohl's. My mother was a loyal Kohl's customer since I was at least in the 5th grade school and now I am 30.

I am very upset about how the customer service department and how they treated her regarding her charge account. My mother was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer and had to have surgery to remove the cancer from her body. During that time when she was in the hospital her Kohl's charge card bill was due. When my mother was discharged from the hospital another Kohl's bill came, but this time attached with a late fee.

We called the customer service line for the charge card and explained the situation about my mother being in the hospital and we also offered to send the hospital discharge papers to show she was in fact admitted into the hospital during the time the bill was do. We had also asked for them to waive the late fee, as my mother has bills relating to her cancer so that just waiving that fee would help. But no, the person was rude and refused to do so! My mother who was still in recovery ended up going into her local Kohl's to pay her bill and as a result cancelled her account because she was upset on how Kohl's reacted. I am also VERY VERY upset because I do not understand why this was an issue.

I mean I know the late fee may not be a lot to some, but for my mother who was dealing (she is cancer free now thank goodness) with medical bills and issues relating to cancer, an extra fee charged while she was in the hospital was wrong. I tried to reach out to Kohl's, but am not able to get through the phone because I need a Charge account with them. Well my mother cancelled her account. Email and chat support send me in circles of contacting one another.

This simply shows that Kohl's does not care.

My family and I will no longer shop at Kohl's and I also make it point to let others know about what happened to my mother so that they can stir clear of Kohl's. All I want to do is let them know of this situation so hopefully they can learn how to better treat human beings

Reason of review: Poor customer service.

Preferred solution: no solution wanted, just want to make Kohl's aware of a terrible situation.

The company was contacted after the bill was received because I was not able to have access tp or open my mother's mail. Therefore how could I call before.

Also I work for a credit card company now so now I do know that Kohls could have honored the fee waiver or directed me to Capital One bank so that we could have known what to do. Also form working at a credit card company now, I do know fees can be waived after, it was only a few days after the statement was mailed.

Regardless the number given on the statement is Kohls credit service who is located in Wisconsin with the Kohls corporate office. So they have the authority to do this or give me the correct information.

So did you call Kohl's Corporate Office?

Yes

So what did their Corporate office tell you?

Everything you said was pretty much a lie. You have laoptop?

Computer? Cell phone? Access and pay from there. You can do that anytime rather than dealing with mail (duh).

And stop lying about working for a credit card company and understand this โ€œwaive feeโ€ business. Itโ€™s not happening, and no one is believing your B S

Agree with the other comments below. If you did not call the Kohl's credit center prior to the bill coming due to explain the situation and make arrangements, then they have no obligation to waive late fees.

People need to take some responsibility by calling before it's too late! Credit cards have agreements and fine print for reason.

How would you suggest someone call before if they are dealing with a serious condition and are thinking about a bill at the moment. " Oh I have stage 4 cancer" let me call Kohls. Sometimes that is not always possible.

I get what youโ€™re saying but Iโ€™m sure you had plenty of time to look and arrange and make sure everything was in order. Or did you just sit down and do nothing as this whole situation was going down???

Because life goes on! No matter what!

Thatโ€™s what being an adult is all about!

I understand you were not raised to be an adult, but you need to learn that life is not easy and it is not going to be all about fixing mistakes! You have to grow up.

Name calling and being rude is no way to solve anything, its nice how people call someone sarcastic and petty, yet then the response they give is rude and judgmental. Talk about "not being raised to be an adult," yet you are the one bashing someone and talking about them. Funny how people are bullies over the internet, but in person they will never have the guts to do/say half of what they "preach" on the internet.

People need to learn how store credit cards work. STORE CREDIT CARDS ARE NOT ISSUED BY THE STORE!

Kohls is not a bank! Kohls is not a lender! The credit card is issued as another commenter stated by Capitol One. Capitol One is the bank who decides when a late fee is issued and how much it is for and if they choose to waive the fee because Capitol One is the bank you owe money to, NOT KOHLS.

From the credit card agreement issued by Capitol One: We may charge a late payment fee if we do not receive at least the required minimum payment for any billing cycle by the date and time it is due.

Your late payment fee will be zero if your balance is $15 or less, $15 if your balance is greater than $15 but less than $50.01, and $27 if your balance is greater than $50.

The late payment fee will not exceed the amount of your minimum payment due. If you pay late and then pay late again in any of the next six consecutive billing cycles the late payment fee will be up to $37.00 until you have paid your minimum payment when due for six consecutive billing cycles.

So it's not that Kohls is unfeeling or uncaring it's that Kohls cannot do anything.

I definitely understand your response, but I think that Kohls could have directed us to the correct place to get assistance.

Yes the company was contacted after the bill was received because I was not able to have access to or open my mother's mail until after we brought her home.

Therefore how could I call before.

Also I work for a credit card company now, so now I do know that Kohls could have honored the fee waiver, noted the account or directed me to Capital One bank so that we could have known what to do to resolve the matter.

Also form working at a credit card company now, I do know fees can be waived after, it was only a few days after the statement was mailed.

Regardless, the number given on the statement is for Kohls credit service, which is the number we called. We also did READ the BACK OF THE STATEMENT so and there was not anything that says "call before an unplanned hospital stay happens" or "call Capital One directly to give information on an unplanned hospital stay because life happens and we can predict the future."

It was just a life event that happened and how the situation was handled was is the main concern because the representative represent Kohls (which is the issue).

Just because you stated this in your reply...

Does not mean that you could not have made a phone call ahead of time.

You are just being sarcastic and petty.

Fair points. Kohls should have done a much better job both over the phone and on the printed statement telling you where to go for a much more direct approach for action from the lender.

And you are also correct, no credit agreement or statement is going to say "call beforehand if such and such occurs". Simply pointing out in the agreement that regardless of anyone's feelings on the company's humanity what the agreement says about late fees and that they are entitled to this ethics aside.

Exactly. The complainer should have found a way to obtain this information earlier to not cause all these issues.

On top of that, if you really worked for a credit card company, you would know that Kohlโ€™s cannot do anything about it.

Either you are new or lying. And surprise surprise, you work for a credit company after you have issues? So no PTSD? Thatโ€™s good.

Still, you need to be in that business longer and understand it more.

There is more to learn in the adult work, but I donโ€™t expect that from you now. It looks like your mother didnโ€™t raise you to understand how adulthood can be hard and you have to be able to PREVENT issues rather than only fixing the ones you make your whole life.

I definitely agree MattD78... haha I needed a person like you to help me so that I could understand before this happened. Thanks for your reponses :)

maybe you should write a complaint about capital one instead

Did you contact Kohls when your mother was in the hospital before the bill was due to make arrangements?

Or did you just wait until you received a bill along with a late fee, and then called Kohls?
