From two previous shopping experiences at kohl’s, I had received two coupons—one $10 kohl’s cash and $10 off my next purchase, and another $20 kohl’s cash and $10 off my next purchase. I know the coupons say on the back that I need to use one per transaction, so I brought up enough items to do just that. When I went up to the register, I asked the cashier if I could use all my coupons in one transaction or if I needed to split it up; she told me that I could use them all together and it wasn’t an issue. After she rang up the items, she began scanning the coupons, but the computer took all of them except for the $10 kohl’s cash coupon. She then turned to me and told me I needed to come back the next day in order to use it. I was appalled and asked her if I could just *** some items and get back in line to I could reuse the coupon.

She then called her manager over and he told me that the coupons were to be used once per family and that it wasn’t within “the spirit of the coupon” to use more than one in one transaction, even though the cashier could use all of my coupons in one transaction. As he walked away, my friend and I just looked at each other and were dumbfounded at what we had just heard. We read the back of the coupons, and it did not say that the coupons were to be used once per family but instead once per customer. It also said nothing about coupons being used once per day. I asked the cashier if she could *** some items and then my friend would become a new customer. She brought the manager back over, and we explained to him that the coupon did not say anything about being used once per day or that it was one coupon per family. He then reiterated that it’s not within the “spirit of the coupon” to be used in more than one transaction, which is when I began to get angry. I explained to the manager that I was not going to come back the next day because that’s a waste of my time. I also explained that my friend was going to become a new customer and use the coupon because it was well within in the coupon’s rules, even if it wasn’t within his own rules. He then rolled his eyes at me and told me there was nothing he could do to stop me from doing that. I asked the cashier to *** some socks I was going to purchase so we could use that for the next transaction. Unfortunately I forgot that the coupon was only for anything $30 or over, so we threw in some chocolate that I really did not want to get the whole transaction to $30. All while we’re doing this second transaction, the manager kept glancing at me with a very disapproving look on his face. We then collected our things and left, bewildered at what just happened.

I was very concerned to see that this type of shoddy customer service was allowed to go on. Not only did the manager make up rules as he went along, but the words he used with my friend and I were very rude and condescending. $10 is not an insignificant amount of money to a college student like myself. The only reason why I purchased as much as I did is because of the coupons I was given; getting people to come back to the store and to purchase more items is the whole point of a coupon, or the “spirit of the coupon” as I’m sure the manager would say. I could not believe that he was willing to waste mine, my friend’s, the cashier’s, and his time to make me go through two transactions even though I had already been told I could use them all. I I felt like he didn’t want my business at all, which is perfectly fine with me. If that’s the way I am going to be treated, then I doubt I will ever return to this location.

Reason of review: Poor customer service.

Location: Chandler, Arizona

The $10 coupon isn't supposed to be used more than once, even if you have multiples because it is the same coupon. The reason she told you to come back the next day was that you would be a new customer. It's really just a "I can't cash you out with 2 transactions at the same time just in case a manager or loss prevention sees" sort of thing.

Maybe when you get through the ethics course at your college you will understand that you were wrong. But you probably won't.

No offense but if you never returned, i think they wont care. To all the people who work in customer service, they could care less.

It is not a threat to them. And if you think about it with common sense, a company is already losing money by allowing coupons so using it again OBVIOUSLY would not be allowed.
